Meditation Basics

Life can sometimes be very emotional. We might be having trouble sleeping because of inner turmoil, issues in our lives or feelings of loss. Our minds race wildly and of course, the night is long as we try to calm down for a rest. When our worries and problems consume our waking hours and interfere with our getting sleep, there are a number of ways to address them.

In some cases we need professional help and need to consult with a medical doctor or psychiatrist to help us work through our anxiety. However, if we are undergoing short-term concerns that take over our lives, learning to meditate can give us the mental break we need to better cope with what we need to.

Here is how your meditation should begin. Firstly get in a comfortable position. You may sit or lie down. Breathe in slowly through your nose and out slowly through your mouth. If any unsettling thoughts come into your mind, continue to breathe "through" the emotions you experience. If you are finding this difficult, picture a color that is easy for you to think about and keep breathing.

It can take a while before we can breathe through upsetting thoughts and related emotions, so thinking of a color for five minutes can give us the mental break we need. Over time, meditation will become easier to do.

Because of how we are wired, learning the skills of meditation will be a challenge – but the peace of mind that can be obtained through meditation will be worth it.
