13 Jack O Lanterns & Stuffed Pumpkins

Posted on October - 16 - 2011

When I was a little girl I asked my Great-grandmother why we carved pumpkins at Halloween and this is what she told me…

A long time ago some people didn’t accept Pagans and Wiccans and we had to hide some of our holidays and celebrations. Halloween is the Pagan holiday of Samhain, a sort of celebration of the changing seasons. This is a very important holiday to us, but was not at all accepted, so we had to find a way to celebrate without anyone finding out. We formed small groups of 13, one for each of the Pagan holidays and each member would be the host for one holiday. On Halloween we like to celebrate outside with a bon fire, lots of dancing and music, but we were always afraid that someone would find us.

One year the person who was to host the Halloween celebration came up with a great plan to scare people out of the area where we were going to have our celebration. Each of us carved scary faces into a pumpkin and at night fall lit candles inside them to make the faces glow. We used the glowing scary faced pumpkins to scare off people and make them think that the area was haunted. No one entered after dark and that allowed us to have our celebrations without fear. We have done it every year since then and now that times have changed, at least a little bit, our tradition has been shared with everyone.
