Harmonious Living
To find tranquility and peace in our chaotic daily lives is what so many of us strive for but never seem to achieve. Today's world is steaming with technological advances which are supposed to enable one to find an easier, more convenient way to live. When life is moving so fast, we seem to crave a slower, quieter, simpler pace. So how do we find balance and harmony? One way is by applying the principles of Zen to our daily surroundings.
It is not necessary to practice or prescribe to all the aspects of Zen in order to attain great benefits from it. The aim is to create a mellow soothing environment to escape to. Using these simple suggestions in your living space can create the calming presence of Zen life.
• Reduce the amount of furniture in your main living area to create an open space. Bring in natural materials to the room such as a rough stone or an unfinished piece of wood furniture. This simple idea will create a sense of balance and harmony in your main living space.
• Use a palette of light colors that includes white and natural colors. Add only tiny splashes of color for accent. Select each piece of furniture or element of décor carefully for both function and beauty.
• Ensure the distance between each piece of furniture remaining is allowing a free flow of air movement throughout the room and each piece to breathe. By reducing the furniture and keeping space between them, even small apartments can feel spacious.
• Leave floors and walls bare to add to the feeling of space. Shade windows only with bare minimum to allow the filtering of light from outside. Bring nature indoors.
• Use subtle and unexpected sources of light. My favorite is an ionize lamp. The coloring of rocks can be shifted to match any room and the dull lighting is often all that is needed in the room for calm, relaxing atmosphere.
• Reflective surfaces can add to space breathing. They also sparkle which is most often associated with freshness.
• Simple glass vessels or etched glass placed in windows to reflect the natural light will add an aura of intimacy.
• A simple flower in a black vase can also add simple beauty and the breath of fresh air into a room. Ensure it is a single flower and not a chaotic bouquet.
Zen teaches that the only way a person can find true harmony is to see oneself as part of nature. Through meditation, a person can discover how closeness with nature and the simple approach to life is the path to inner peace. By simplifying a single living space in your home, you can have a spiritual retreat in which to escape the chaotic life on the outside.
